Calculate microwave electricity cost using input wattage and actual cooking minutes rather than advertised output power.

Microwave ovens commonly advertise cooking output such as 900 or 1,000 watts. The appliance must draw more electrical input than the microwave energy delivered to food. For electricity cost, use input watts from the nameplate or manual. WattFigure’s editable preset uses 1,500 input watts, 0.25 hour per use day, 20 use days per month, and a 100% duty cycle. Replace it with exact data and actual cooking minutes.
The formula divides watts by 1,000 and multiplies by hours, quantity, and duty-cycle fraction. Fifteen minutes is 0.25 hour, so the preset gives 1.5 × 0.25, or 0.375 kWh per modeled use day. Monthly cost multiplies by use days and the electric rate. Several short sessions can be added together as total daily minutes. Convert minutes to hours by dividing by 60.
Power settings do not always mean lower input watts
Many conventional microwave ovens reduce cooking power by cycling the magnetron on and off. A 50% setting may draw near full input during on intervals and little during off intervals. In that case, the duty-cycle control can approximate the average. Inverter designs may modulate differently. A complete-session plug-in meter reading, where the meter and setup are properly rated and permitted, captures actual behavior more directly.
Measure across the whole cooking session, including pauses if the appliance remains active. The clock and control panel create a small standby load over many hours. If standby matters to the question, create a separate row with measured low watts and 24 hours rather than adding it to cooking power.
Nameplate input is usually a conservative active value. Cooking output printed on the front is not interchangeable. If volts and amps are the only available information, their product is a rough input scenario, not guaranteed real power because power factor and operating states matter.
Compare by food task and time
A microwave can use less energy than a full-size oven for reheating a small portion because it operates for fewer minutes and does not preheat a large cavity. That does not establish one universal savings percentage. Food quantity, desired result, cookware, appliance efficiency, and cooking time vary. Compare measured or calculated kWh for the same completed task.
Short runtimes make accurate time entry important. Rounding five minutes to half an hour creates a sixfold error before any other assumption. Add typical weekly minutes and divide by the relevant number of days, or define one use day as a batch of sessions. Keep the notes understandable so the scenario can be repeated.
Do not change cooking time or power in a way that conflicts with the recipe, product manual, or food-safety guidance. Microwave-safe containers, supervision, cleaning, door integrity, and service requirements are safety topics outside the calculator. Price small loads consistently
WattFigure’s state selector uses a preliminary EIA residential average derived from reported revenue and sales. It is not a specific tariff. Use the applicable cents-per-kWh price from your bill for household planning. Fixed customer charges do not normally change with a few minutes of microwave use, so dividing the entire bill by kWh can overstate the marginal price in some situations.
Time-of-use rates may affect dinner-hour cooking, but microwave energy per session is often small. Calculate peak and off-peak periods separately only when the added precision matters. Avoid reporting fractions of a cent as if they were exact; the input assumptions may have more uncertainty than the displayed arithmetic.
When evaluating a replacement, operating cost is usually one small factor. Capacity, cooking performance, controls, installation, ventilation, reliability, safety condition, and purchase price also matter. Standardized comparison data is preferable to an unsupported claim that a new microwave will save a fixed percentage.

- Separate standby from active cooking if it matters.
- Compare appliances by the same completed cooking task.

When sessions vary, total the minutes from several ordinary days before creating the worksheet. Preserve whether the input includes reheating, defrosting, and cooking. A transparent weekly average is stronger than choosing one busy day and silently treating it as every day.
