Model preheating and thermostat cycling

An electric oven draws substantial power when its heating elements are energized, then cycles those elements to maintain temperature. Cost depends on rated input, preheat, cooking duration, temperature, door opening, cookware, and oven design. WattFigure’s example uses 2,500 watts for one hour, 12 use days per month, and a 70% duty cycle. It is an editable planning case, not a universal oven rating.

The formula is watts divided by 1,000, multiplied by hours, quantity, and duty-cycle fraction. At the preset values, a modeled cooking day is 2.5 × 1 × 0.70, or 1.75 kWh. If preheating adds time, include it in the hours or create a separate row. The monthly field can represent cooking days, while quantity can represent similar simultaneous ovens. Annual output repeats that month twelve times; holiday or seasonal cooking should be modeled separately.

Choose a realistic input

The appliance nameplate or manual may list total connected load for bake, broil, controls, lights, and accessories. The full rating may exceed average bake power because elements cycle and may not operate simultaneously. Use a whole-cycle kWh measurement from suitable whole-home or circuit monitoring when available. Ranges are commonly on dedicated high-voltage circuits, so an ordinary plug-in meter is inappropriate. Never improvise electrical access.

If only rated watts are available, duty cycle makes the assumption explicit. A high initial preheat period can be near full power, followed by cycling. Opening the door releases heat and may trigger longer reheating. Convection fans add a smaller motor load but can alter cooking time or temperature recommendations. Use settings required by the recipe and appliance instructions rather than changing them solely to obtain a lower estimate.

Self-clean cycles use high temperatures for extended periods and should be modeled separately from routine cooking. Follow safety and ventilation instructions. Do not hide an occasional high-energy cycle inside an everyday duty-cycle percentage if the goal is to understand its specific cost.

Compare cooking methods by completed task

A microwave or countertop appliance may use less energy for a small portion because it heats a smaller space or operates for less time. A full-size oven can be efficient for multiple dishes cooked together. Compare the total kWh needed to complete the same food-preparation task, not just nameplate watts. A 1,500-watt microwave operating briefly can use less energy than a 1,200-watt appliance running much longer.

Batch cooking may distribute preheat energy across more food, but storage, food safety, preference, and schedule matter. Avoid universal savings percentages. Use recorded cooking frequency and duration to build a household-specific scenario.

Oven condition influences cycling. A damaged gasket, control fault, or unusual heating behavior requires appropriate service, not a calculator adjustment. Keep vents and clearances as directed. WattFigure cannot diagnose equipment or judge whether an appliance is safe to operate.

Translate kWh to the relevant cost

The state rate selector uses an EIA residential average calculated from revenue and sales. It is a reference, not your tariff. Enter a current applicable cents-per-kWh rate where possible. A bill may contain fixed fees, taxes, riders, tiers, or time-of-use prices. Fixed charges generally do not disappear when one cooking session is changed.

Time-of-use pricing can make cooking time relevant. If dinner preparation falls in a peak window, calculate that portion at the peak price. Do not change safe cooking practice merely for energy timing. One blended rate remains useful for a broad annual comparison if its limitation is stated.

When comparing an older and newer oven, standardized annual energy may be less informative than actual household cooking because frequency varies widely. Use equal cooking tasks, duration, and price. Purchase, installation, fuel availability, capacity, performance, and maintenance are separate considerations. Gas ovens also use a fuel plus some electricity, so an electricity-only row is incomplete.

Accuracy checklist

  • Use electrical input watts, not oven temperature.
  • Include preheat and separately model self-clean cycles.
  • Treat rated load as an assumption unless complete-cycle kWh is known.
  • Compare cooking methods by the same finished task.
  • Model seasonal or holiday months separately.
  • Use qualified measurement methods for dedicated circuits.

For recurring meals, record several representative sessions rather than selecting the shortest one. A monthly schedule can combine ordinary baking, longer roasting, and occasional broiling as separate rows. Clear categories make the total more useful than a single averaged hour whose origin cannot be checked.
