An electric clothes dryer is a high-power appliance used in discrete cycles. Its monthly cost is best modeled from electrical input, average cycle duration, and the number of loads rather than from “hours per day” imagined as continuous daily operation. WattFigure’s editable preset uses 3,000 watts, one hour per use day, 12 use days per month, and an 80% duty cycle. Many dryers have a higher nameplate rating, and heating elements cycle, so use exact-model evidence.
The watts-based formula divides input watts by 1,000 and multiplies by cycle hours, quantity, and duty-cycle fraction. At the preset values, one modeled use day consumes 3 × 1 × 0.80, or 2.4 kWh. If one use day represents one load, the days-per-month field can represent monthly loads up to the field limit. For multiple loads on laundry day, increase hours, quantity, or use days in a way that leaves a clear record.
Obtain a defensible energy value
An EnergyGuide label or manufacturer data may provide annual kWh under a standardized test. That is useful for comparing models, but household cycle choices, load moisture, fabric type, venting, and load frequency can differ. Use the annual kWh at your own electricity rate rather than relying on the label’s dollar estimate.
Electric dryers often use 240-volt circuits and are not suitable for an ordinary plug-in meter. Do not improvise a measurement connection. Whole-home monitoring or a meter designed and installed for the circuit may provide data, but electrical work belongs within applicable instructions and qualified practice. A nameplate or standardized energy figure is safer than experimental measurement.
Rated input can include the heating element and motor at a maximum operating state. The heater cycles as temperatures and moisture change, which is why the preset does not assume 100% full rated power for the entire cycle. Heat-pump dryers behave differently: they may use lower power for a longer time. Compare total kWh per completed load, not watts or minutes alone.
Moisture and airflow drive the cycle
The washer affects dryer energy because a stronger final spin leaves less water for the dryer to remove. Load size and fabric also matter. Heavy towels retain more water than light garments. Overloading can impair tumbling and airflow, while very small loads may not use capacity efficiently. Follow appliance directions rather than choosing a load solely to optimize a calculator result.
For vented dryers, a restricted or incorrectly installed exhaust can extend drying and create safety hazards. Clean the lint filter and maintain the vent according to manufacturer and fire-safety guidance. WattFigure cannot diagnose airflow and should never be used to justify continued operation when a dryer is unusually hot, slow, damaged, or showing an error.
Automatic moisture sensing can stop a cycle when clothing is dry, while a fixed timed cycle may continue longer than needed. Low-heat settings can use less instantaneous heating but may run longer; total kWh determines cost. Measure or compare complete loads under similar conditions. Include standby only if it is material and supported by data; it can be a separate low-power row.
Compare costs and options on equal work
The state selector uses an EIA residential average, not a household tariff. Enter the applicable cents-per-kWh price when known. Fixed customer charges usually remain regardless of one dryer load, while time-of-use rates can make the hour of laundry important. Calculate peak and off-peak loads separately if prices differ substantially.
When comparing dryers, use kWh per completed load and the same annual load count. A faster high-power dryer is not automatically more expensive than a slower low-power dryer; energy is power integrated over time. Include washer extraction, required venting, installation, maintenance, purchase price, and expected service in a broader decision. Gas dryers also use electricity for motors and controls plus a separate fuel, so an electricity-only comparison is incomplete.
Drying some loads outdoors or using a rack can reduce dryer cycles where practical, but moisture, weather, building rules, accessibility, time, and fabric care affect feasibility. State the changed number of loads rather than applying an unsupported percentage savings claim.
