How to Read an EnergyGuide Label

Use the yellow EnergyGuide label correctly, including annual kWh, estimated cost assumptions, and comparison ranges.

The yellow label is a comparison tool, not your future bill

The Federal Trade Commission’s EnergyGuide label helps consumers compare the energy use and operating cost of covered appliances. The most useful figures are the estimated annual energy consumption in kilowatt-hours and the product’s position within a comparison range. The estimated annual operating cost is calculated with a stated national electricity price and usage assumption. Your household rate and behavior can differ.

Read the product identity first. Confirm appliance type, capacity, and model number. A comparison range applies to similar models in a defined category, not every appliance that serves a broadly similar purpose. A small top-freezer refrigerator and a large feature-rich model may not share the same range.

Focus on annual kWh

Kilowatt-hours describe energy. Multiply annual kWh by your dollars-per-kWh rate to create a local price scenario. If the label shows 500 kWh per year and the applicable rate is 18.44 cents, the arithmetic is 500 × $0.1844, or $92.20 per year. WattFigure accepts 18.44 in the cents-per-kWh field.

This substitution updates price but does not change the standardized usage assumptions. A household may run more laundry loads, choose different dishwasher cycles, keep a refrigerator in a hotter room, or use different settings. Treat the result as a comparable estimate, not a prediction.

The label’s dollar amount remains useful for comparing products on the same store shelf because it applies a consistent rate assumption. Do not compare a dollar figure from an older label with a newer label without checking whether the assumed price and test procedure changed. Comparing annual kWh avoids some of that confusion, though test procedures can also evolve.

Interpret the comparison range

The range shows the operating costs of models with similar features or capacity at the time the label data was prepared. A marker near the low-cost end indicates lower estimated operating cost within that comparison class. It does not mean the appliance has the lowest cost among all sizes and configurations, and it does not certify performance or durability.

Capacity matters. A larger appliance may use more total energy while providing more service. Compare the size that meets the household need. Buying excess capacity solely because one metric looks favorable may not reduce total consumption.

Understand labels for different products

Labels vary by appliance type. Refrigerators, freezers, dishwashers, clothes washers, water heaters, room air conditioners, and heating or cooling equipment can display different metrics and assumptions. A room air conditioner may show cooling capacity and efficiency information in addition to cost. Never enter cooling Btu/h in WattFigure’s watts field.

For clothes washers and dishwashers, standardized energy can reflect defined cycle and water-heating assumptions. Household water-heater fuel and cycle choices affect actual cost. For dryers, loads and remaining moisture matter. Read the explanatory text and linked FTC guidance rather than extracting one number without context.

Some products use energy labels or product information formats other than the familiar yellow label. ENERGY STAR certification is separate: it indicates a product meets program efficiency criteria, while EnergyGuide supplies comparison information required for covered products. Neither replaces the model manual or a full purchasing evaluation.

Put label data into a household worksheet

Start with annual kWh. Divide by 12 for a monthly comparison if use is reasonably steady. Do not divide by watts to infer hours unless the device truly has a stable power level; cycling and test assumptions make that inference weak. For seasonal equipment, annual standardized kWh can remain a comparison figure while household monthly scenarios use local operation.

Apply the same current rate to all products being compared. Preserve capacity, configuration, and source date in your notes. Then consider purchase price, installation, space, reliability, repair, performance, water use, fuel type, and expected service life. A lower annual energy figure does not automatically justify replacement of a working appliance.

Watch for misleading shopping claims

Do not accept a savings claim without a baseline. “Save $100” must specify compared product, usage, rate, and period. Recalculate with the same rate and service assumptions. Avoid subtracting a label estimate that uses one national rate from a household result that uses another.

The best use of EnergyGuide is disciplined comparison: exact model, comparable category, annual kWh, one rate, and documented limitations.

Transcribe the label before interpreting it

Store displays and product pages can place several numbers near one another. Begin by recording the exact model identifier, appliance category, capacity or size, estimated annual kWh, stated annual operating cost, comparison range, and the electricity-price assumption printed on the label. Do not substitute a retailer’s marketing bullet for a label value without checking the model match.

Model suffixes can identify capacity, finish, market, or feature differences. A photograph of one label should not be attached to a similar-looking model unless the identifier matches. If the label is missing or illegible, look for the manufacturer’s model documentation or an official product database rather than reconstructing a number from a nearby shelf tag.

The comparison range has a defined peer group. Record that group before saying a product is near the low or high end. A low-cost position among large side-by-side refrigerators does not mean the model uses less energy than every smaller top-freezer refrigerator. The label supports comparison within its stated category, while household sizing remains a separate decision.

Recalculate two labels with one current rate

Suppose model A lists 430 kWh per year and model B lists 510 kWh per year. At the WattFigure reference rate of 18.44 cents per kWh, model A has a recalculated annual energy charge of 430 × $0.1844 = $79.29. Model B produces 510 × $0.1844 = $94.04. The modeled difference is 80 kWh and $14.75 per year.

That calculation holds price constant and preserves the standardized annual energy difference. It does not show that model A will save exactly $14.75 in a particular home. Door openings, room temperature, settings, loading, installation clearance, maintenance, and test-procedure differences can change actual use. If the two labels were produced under different test rules or comparison classes, investigate before treating the difference as directly comparable.

Do not subtract the printed dollar values when their labels use different electricity-price assumptions. Recalculate both annual kWh values with one rate. If a household tariff is available, use the same current marginal or documented blended rate for both products. Keep the original label rate in the record so a reviewer understands why the printed and recalculated dollar figures differ.

Translate annual data without inventing a monthly pattern

Dividing annual kWh by twelve creates an even monthly allocation for budgeting. It does not prove that each month is equal. Refrigerators can use more energy in hot rooms, room air conditioners are seasonal, and laundry frequency can vary. Preserve annual kWh as the primary standardized boundary and label the monthly division as an allocation.

For model A at 430 kWh per year, the even allocation is about 35.8 kWh per month. Entering 35.8 as though it came from a measured calendar month would erase its origin. A better note is “430 label kWh/year ÷ 12 for planning.” When the calculator expects watts and hours rather than direct annual energy, do not reverse-engineer a duty cycle from the label unless a separate component analysis genuinely requires it.

EnergyGuide cost often includes usage assumptions specific to the product category. Clothes-washer and dishwasher labels may depend on a defined number of cycles and water-heating assumptions. A household completing twice the standard cycle count should not simply copy the printed annual cost. Use kWh per cycle when available or scale cautiously while acknowledging fixed standby and non-linear cycle differences.

Distinguish EnergyGuide, ENERGY STAR, and manufacturer claims

EnergyGuide is a federal comparison disclosure for covered products. ENERGY STAR is a separate efficiency certification program with category-specific criteria. A product can have an EnergyGuide label without earning ENERGY STAR, and the certification logo does not replace the annual kWh figure needed for cost calculations.

Manufacturer features such as eco mode, smart scheduling, adaptive controls, or high efficiency require context. Determine whether the label test uses the feature by default and whether the household will use the same setting. A percentage-saving claim needs a named baseline, test condition, and service level. Do not combine the most favorable marketing percentage with the label’s already efficient annual kWh unless the source explicitly supports that combination.

Efficiency ratios and capacity metrics describe performance relationships, not direct electrical watts. Cooling Btu/h is thermal output, while the WattFigure power field requires electrical input watts. An air conditioner label may show CEER or another efficiency metric; use the official test data or model specifications to find electrical energy rather than entering capacity as consumption.

Add purchase context without turning the label into a verdict

Annual energy difference can inform a simple operating-cost comparison. If model A costs $120 more to buy and the modeled annual energy difference is $14.75, simple payback is about 8.1 years. This arithmetic omits financing, repairs, lifespan, reliability, capacity, water, installation, disposal, and residual value. Call it simple payback and show the assumptions.

A narrow energy difference may be smaller than uncertainty or normal behavioral variation. In that case, fit, accessibility, repair support, noise, performance, and durability may reasonably dominate. EnergyGuide is not a product quality score or safety approval. Likewise, a large standardized difference deserves attention but does not justify buying the wrong capacity or replacing a sound appliance without broader analysis.

When comparing a current appliance with a new label, the evidence is asymmetric. The new product has a standardized estimate; the existing appliance may have measured household data. Present both boundaries. A meter observation from the old unit can be locally relevant, while the label for the new unit supports standardized comparison. Do not describe the difference as guaranteed savings.

Keep a label audit trail

For any published or saved calculation, retain the model, label annual kWh, comparison class, source URL or photograph reference, label rate, replacement rate, arithmetic, and exclusions. Recheck the source if the model changes or a page is materially revised. A retailer may update a listing without preserving the earlier document.

Protect personal information when pairing label data with a utility bill. The product label is public, but the household rate can be calculated without storing an account number, service address, or full bill. Record only the rate components required for the scenario.

Finally, use language proportionate to the evidence: “The label estimates,” “under the standard test,” and “at the selected rate” accurately communicate the boundary. Avoid “will cost,” “guaranteed saving,” or “officially cheapest.” Reading an EnergyGuide label well means retaining the comparison structure that made its numbers meaningful in the first place.
